National Geographic Society is seeking proposals for its Conservation Technologies Programme to advance breakthrough technologies that can scale National Geographic’s efforts to explore, visualize, understand, and ultimately protect the planet.

National Geographic, through its engineering team, has a long record of success in developing innovative, cutting-edge technologies that have opened their eyes to different viewpoints, helped them to see the world in a new light and explore it in new ways. From the depths of the ocean, to the top of mountains, technologies such as Crittercam, DropCam, aerial imagery, and camera traps have already demonstrated their ability to transform the fields of exploration, science, and conservation.

Priorities

Priority will be given to projects that use technology to do one or more of the following:

  • Develop tools or capabilities needed to generate new data and insights on biodiversity distribution, patterns, and trends
  • Inform where future protected areas should be prioritized
  • Support integrated multi-sensor monitoring systems for the natural world (including land and ocean), and cultural heritage.
  • Advance surveillance/alarm systems for protected areas (natural and cultural) by providing real-time, local-to-global, situational awareness

Funding Information

  • Typical proposal requests should be less than $50,000; applicants may request up to $100,000, of which up to 20 percent of the total can be used as a stipend for the applicant or team members, and up to 15 percent of which can be used for institutional overhead (applicable only for awarded grants of at least $50,000).
  • All applications should explicitly review what has already been accomplished and state the plan for evaluating the impact of the work.

PPIAF’s 2018 Call for Global Knowledge Proposals is seeking submissions on topics pertaining to private sector participation in infrastructure, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and sub-national finance in PPIAF’s priority sectors (Energy, Water and Transportation). Multi-sector proposals related to the general PPP enabling environment are also acceptable.

PPIAF will consider global knowledge products that provide lessons learned or best practices that can be applied across countries and across regions. A total of $1 million has been allocated for this effort. For additional information, please see PPIAF’s Call for Proposals FAQS. Proposals will be accepted for:

  • Knowledge Products (e.g., toolkits, guides, manuals, briefs, training seminars and workshops, development of training materials, capacity building)

  • Outreach (translation, dissemination, conferences)

Proposals will be accepted for knowledge products and outreach activities on the following topics:

  • Best practices to improve national and/or local governments’ capacity, particularly in low-income and fragile countries, to address sustainability issues in infrastructure through private sector participation.

  • Innovative financing of infrastructure within the Maximizing Finance for Development agenda, at national and subnational levels.  

  • Activities that produce learning on what works and what does not when integrating gender considerations, including prevention and response to gender based violence, in PPP frameworks and/or to promote female entrepreneurs’ participation in the supply chain of infrastructure PPPs.

  • Case studies or best practices on incorporating a pro-poor dimension in the design/construction/monitoring of infrastructure projects with private sector participation.

Selection Criteria:

The 2018 Africa Energy Innovation Competiton is set to accelerate the development of early-stage energy firms across Africa. Across Africa, the main energy challenge is to rapidly deliver modern energy services to millions of households and businesses using sustainable and affordable energy technologies. This competition challenges early-stage energy entrepreneurs from Africa to collaborate with local research institutions or industries to develop a prototype model of a key device/equipment for a social energy enterprise or energy management system using local resources.

Young professionals between the ages of 18 and 35 years from Africa are invited to participate in the competition and nominate a relevant local research institution or organization. Applications may be submitted by a team of up to three people. At least 1 member of the team must be from the local research institution or industry. Teams may be formed across different schools, institutions, companies, countries etc. Individuals or teams may submit multiple applications.

AWDF invites applications from eligible African women’s organisations under its main grants programme. Applications for the first grantmaking round of 2018 can be sent in under one or more of AWDF’s thematic areas as listed below. These frame AWDF’s current funding strategy Shaping Africa’s Future;

  • Body & Health Rights

The focus for this grantmaking round will be on ending violence against women; sexual and reproductive rights including HIV/AIDS; LBT rights; women’s emotional wellbeing and mental health including for women human rights defenders.

  • Economic Security & Justice

The focus for this grantmaking round will be on land, property and inheritance rights; food sovereignty and women’s rights in contexts of food production and agriculture; climate and environmental justice; women’s economic security and livelihoods.

  • Leadership, Participation & Peace

The focus for this grantmaking round will be on women’s participation in governance and decision-making, including elections; peace and security; defending democratic space and women human rights defenders; building women’s leadership.

AWDF is particularly interested in projects working with young women, women facing multiple discrimination, and approaches that include engaging the arts, culture, sports and technology.

AWDF is looking for innovative and effective projects that address the needs of and involve the women and communities most affected by inequality and injustice in the leadership and implementation of projects.

Grant Size & Period

Eligibility Criteria

The basic qualifying criteria for applying organisations are as follows:

  • Must be led by a woman and have majority of its staff and board being women
  • Must be duly registered in an African country
  • Must have been in existence for at least 3 years
  • Must have the needed organisational structures for effective implementation of the project
  • Must have an appreciable financial management system to properly account for funds received
  • Must be capable of reporting back on the outcomes of the project
  • Must complete the necessary application forms

Please note that AWDF does NOT fund men-led organisations; political parties or campaigning; government agencies; individuals; scholarships; for-profit initiatives and projects aimed at religious conversion or proselytizing.

Summary of opportunity

This call will support cutting-edge applied field and/or laboratory research projects with the potential to generate high impact and innovative results with particular impact on the food insecure and poor in eligible eastern and southern African countries. All projects require a sound environmental impact assessment, the consideration of social and gender issues, and an applicability to smallholder farmers. The projects should address real practical development challenges and research needs of the 10 developing countries.

The fund will focus on issues under four key research areas aligned to regional priorities as stated in the Malabo declaration:

  1. Improved productivity and incomes for farmers and communities and decreased post-harvest losses;
  2. Improved gender equity;
  3. Nutrition and human health; and
  4. Climate change and sustainable water management.

Eligibility criteria

Of special interest is supporting innovative research with the potential for breakthrough results that can be effectively scaled-up and easily adopted by smallholder farmers, food processors, post-harvest handlers, and other value chain actors to improve food and nutrition security and achieve gender equality.

This call is open to applicant organizations that will work in partnership with others to carry out research in one (or more) of the eligible countries: Burundi; Ethiopia; Kenya; Malawi; Mozambique; Rwanda; Tanzania; Uganda; Zambia; and Zimbabwe.

The CFC is an intergovernmental foundation investing in organisations and enterprises pursuing SDG Agenda in commodity value chains in its member countries. Through a range of financial instruments, the CFC seeks to support business activities in the field of commodity development, including agriculture, minerals and metals in Developing Countries. CFC is an impact investor and expects proposals aiming to generate sound financial return, and provide for a measurable social and environmental impact.

Objectives

  • CFC supports activities which promote the contribution of the commodity sector to achieving the SDGs in CFC member countries including the following aspects:
    • Social: Create employment (particularly for youth and women), provide sustained increase in household incomes, reduce poverty, and enhance food security.
    • Economic: Enhance production and productivity, achieve higher local value addition; improve competitiveness of producers, producer organisations and small and medium sized industries, support the financial sector development.

  • operate in commodity value chains in CFC member countries (mentioned below) or provide financial services to micro, small and medium sized businesses operating in these value chains,

This involves background policy studies and analyses, stakeholder consultations, production of policy briefs, and implementation of actions leading to the development of an innovation-driven bioeconomy strategy for eastern African states.

  • Category 1 Grants: To develop and pilot innovative and economically viable biobased technologies or products (US$ 2.25 million)
  • Category 2 Grants: For biobased technology business incubation (US$ 750,000)
