The United States Government, as represented by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Global Development Lab (Lab), is seeking applications for the Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) program.

Through a year-round grant competition, Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) sources innovative ideas, pilots and rigorously tests them and supports the scale-up of solutions that demonstrate proven impact and cost-effectiveness. DIV’s tiered funding model; inspired by venture capital funds, invests comparatively small amounts of funding in a variety of unproven ideas and provides more substantial support only to those that demonstrate rigorous evidence of impact, cost-effectiveness, and potential to scale. Taking a portfolio approach to its impact enables DIV to embrace risk – and occasional failure – as it generates an evidence base for open innovation. DIV’s aim is to create a portfolio of innovations across all sectors and geographies in which USAID works, to improve the lives of millions around the world.

DIV funds development innovations, which can include:

  • New technologies.
  • New ways of delivering or financing goods and services.
  • More cost-effective adaptations to existing solutions.
  • New ways of increasing uptake of existing proven solutions,
  • Policy changes, shifts, or nudges based on insights from behavioral economics.
  • Social or behavioral innovations.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Public, private, for-profit, and nonprofit organizations, as well as institutions of higher education, public international organizations, non-governmental organizations, the USA and non-USA governmental organizations, multilateral and international donor organizations, are eligible under this APS.
  • All organizations must be determined to be responsive to the APS and sufficiently responsible to perform or participate in the final award.
  • This award is also contingent on USAID obtaining concurrence from the responsible Mission.
  • All applicants must be legally recognized organizational entities under applicable law. Local organizations are eligible and encouraged to apply, as well as consortia of local organizations.
  • Participation of foreign government organizations under this APS is possible only through an approved sub-award agreement with a prime recipient.
  • USAID encourages applications from new partners. Resultant awards to new partners may require
  • USAID to undertake necessary pre-award reviews of these organizations to determine “responsibility” in regards to fiduciary and other oversight responsibilities of the award.

Researchers have examined the available literature for the effects of acute and chronic administration of cocoa flavanols on different cognitive domains. It turns out that cognitive performance was improved by a daily intake of cocoa flavanols. It has to be noted though, that the effects depended on the length and mental load of the used cognitive tests to measure the effect of acute cocoa consumption. In young and healthy adults, for example, a high demanding cognitive test was required to uncover the subtle immediate behavioral effects that cocoa flavanols have on this group.

The effects of relatively long-term ingestion of cocoa flavanols (ranging from 5 days up to 3 months) has generally been investigated in elderly individuals. It turns out that for them cognitive performance was improved by a daily intake of cocoa flavanols. Factors such as attention, processing speed, working memory, and verbal fluency were greatly affected. These effects were, however, most pronounced in older adults with a starting memory decline or other mild cognitive impairments. Readmore

Neonic pesticides are killing our Bees

Researchers from York University discovered that, if worker and queen honeybees exposed to field realistic levels of neonicotinoids die sooner and reducing the health of the entire colony. The researchers were also surprised to find that the neonicotinoid contaminated pollen collected by the honeybees came not from crops grown from neonicotinoid treated seeds, but plants growing in areas adjacent to those crops. This is season-long, field realistic research with typical exposure. Readmore

Australian engineer in collaboration with Dr. Susan Graham have develop a pair of drones that can help mitigate some of the damage by planting trees at a rate that far outpaces what is possible to do by hand. The first drone scans an area of land, searching for an ideal plot to plant. This drone helps to make a 3D map of the area and then special algorithms are employed to find the best places to plant. The second drone then takes that map and its payload of up to 150 seed pods and gets to work shooting the seeds into the ground. Lauren Fletcher, the CEO of BioCarbon Engineering, said: "We're firing at one a second, which means a pair of operators will be able to plant nearly 100,000 trees per day — 60 teams like this will get us to a billion trees a year."

Drones get a lot of press for their delivery capabilities, but Amazon packages aren't the only way to utilize this technology. There are lifesaving drones that can beat EMTs to emergencies, drones that could help to support declining bee populations, and even drones to stand in for backup dancers. All of this and much more is to come, since not even the sky is the limit. Readmore

The future is here: The first-ever production-ready flying car is set to be revealed in just over a week.
